Hudson Awning began fabricating sails of tall ships in the late 1800's. Today they create custom awnings and canopies for the nation's finest homes and businesses as they celebrate their 130th year.
In 1881, Rutherford B. Hayes was President, Picasso was born, the American Red Cross was founded and Hudson Awning & Sign Co. was established.
During that time, when tall sailing ships set forth on their long voyages from the ports along the Hudson River, someone had to fabricate and mend the billowy sails that propelled the ships. And so, Hudson Awning & Sign Co. was born, taking its name from the ports it serviced.
Although the cooling protection awnings offered from the searing rays of the sun was known even in the Roman Coliseum, awnings were a secondary business for Hudson. It wasn’t until the invention of the steam engine and the rise of “city living” that awnings became the mainstay of the small company and its skilled craftsmen. Almost every window on apartment houses and brownstones boasted cooling, canvas awnings, meticulously sewn and fabricated by hand.
The 1940’s saw the development of local urban shopping areas. Storefront awnings became popular and commercial accounts prospered. It was at that time, the Burak family became the owners of Hudson Awning & Sign Co.
Today the company uses sophisticated computer technology to custom design awnings, canopies and shade systems for the nation’s finest homes and businesses. They work closely with contractors and architects on large commercial projects. They research, design and fabricate for the movie and television industry and provide solutions for many special projects.
“We realize what an accomplishment it is to be celebrating our 130th year and know our loyal customers are to thank for taking us here,” said Ed Burak, President.
After 130 years, Hudson remains on the cutting edge. Hudson Awning & Sign Co. is located in Bayonne, NJ and can be reached at 800-624-1012. www.hudsonawning.com
